Who wouldn’t want to know a few tricks on how to easily reduce their household’s energy expenses without having to compromise their lifestyle? Nobody …. that’s who. If you want to save money on energy then finding a company where you can buy less expensive electricity is a no brainer but in reality there is never going to be significant savings in the same market.
Paying 26.4 cents per kWh is better than paying 28.1 cents per kWh but if you really want to make a difference, the savings will be made in your choices of household appliances and, more importantly, your electrical habits. People pay varying amounts for electricity depending on the region they live in with frequently big variations from state to state in many countries, but, variations within the same market, … are not so profound.
I have frequently said that “the most expensive kWh of energy you will ever buy is the one you didn’t need to buy in the first place”. Regardless of where you live, the price of energy is set by “what will the market bear”, supply costs and taxes. In the same market there is rarely any significant margin for negotiation although I will advise that several years ago one Australian company offered savings of 30% to new customers on the general market rate at the time. Imagine the profit margins if a supplier can sell energy for 30% under market price and still make a profit. But the information I will direct your attention to on this occasion is focussed on practical tips. Collectively these tips can add up and be significant if they are habitually applied. In June of 2019 I started giving seasonally appropriate tips on how the average household could reduce their home energy expenses on Moreton Bay’s Community Radio Station 101.5FM. The tips are broadcast weekly at 10:10am for anyone in the region and are only a few minutes in length. Example here https://1015fm.com.au/2020/02/energy-efficiency-tips-with-john-lynn-on-101-5fm-2020-02-21/ For those who do not have direct access to the live broadcasts, you can still access the tips from the Station’s website online. The tips are seasonally appropriate as one idea in the summer may not always be as applicable in the winter. For northern hemisphere residents, simply stay six months behind as the tips are useful in any home worldwide and, because the laws of nature do not change, they will be of benefit as long as the earth exists.
Simple tips like having the kids ready for showers at the same time each night saves having to run hot water through cold pipes numerous times each night both in summer and winter, which also saves water. For those families who run an exhaust fan to dry the bathroom it only needs to perform its energy hungry function once each night after everyone is shiny and clean. For those who see the value in routine, this habit also has the potential to be time efficient and save even more hot water as the family’s shower “production line” needs to keep moving so there is no time for unnecessary long showers for anyone. Other simple practical tips include the family tip for those who have an electrical or gas hot water heater with a thermostat. Remember to turn off the hot water system when the family goes on that two week holiday, especially in winter, is worth the effort as you will not be using the hot water you will pay to heat whilst you are away. Simply turn it on again when you get home. Why pay to heat water you are not going to use?
