An EMF is an Electromagnetic Field. Why would anyone be worried about Electric or Magnetic fields in their homes? You can’t see or hear them so are they a concern and why? Researching “What EMF does to your body?”, will deliver online explanations like this one. “EMFs influence metabolic processes in the human body and exert various biological effects on cells through a range of mechanisms. EMF disrupts the chemical structures of tissue since a high degree electromagnetic energy absorption can change the electric current in the body”.
Well, that doesn’t sound good. Being near anything that runs on electricity is a potential health risk as they all produce E-fields, H-fields, or both because mains powered appliances in the home have a moving electrical charge in them and that means there will be both E-fields and H-fields near them when they are in use or even when they are plugged in and switched on at the wall. Now we have another good reason to turn of those electronic devises off at the wall when they are not in use. The wasted (vampire) energy is causing more concern, this time not for your back pocket, but for you and your family’s health. Luckily the further you are from any working appliance the less exposure you have to the produced EMF’s and the effects drop off quickly as you move away, … in fact the danger is reduced exponentially due to the inverse square law.
Can you get far enough away from all the devises in your home to be safe from EMFs?
As touched on in part 1, there are homes in which there may be fewer places that are safe from a home’s EMF load than there are in other family homes. It all depends on the electrical equipment within the home and where it is located.
Whilst checking EMFs in a sound/music room at one location, we found that some computers produce serious amounts of EMFs whilst others produce significantly less. Each environment needs to be tested for an accurate result because, even after weeks of using the tester, we were still amazed to find that some devises, that we had assumed to be safe, most certainly were not. And it’s not just the 240-volt AC appliances that have the potential to harm your health, devices like your smart phone also pose risk.

A brief overview of addressing the dilemma of having health threatening EMFs in your home is to first of all know the characteristics of the devices you use. This can only be ascertained by doing an audit of the home with a EMF Tester. Identify how far away you need to be from each devise in order to be in a safe environment when the devices or appliances are in use and with that knowledge, keep your distance.
Turn every unused appliance off at the wall every time to alleviate the wasted vampire energy and to stop causing you more grief by exposing you to harmful EMFs. Turning a blind eye, ie, sitting on a couch watching TV in a sea of EMFs is NOT conducive to long term health. My first and only opinion in this article would be that swallowing a bottle of tablets after you experience negative effects from long term exposure to these household EMFs will not adequately address your concern. Various devices as shown in Pic 1 and Pic 2 may vary in magnitude in both E-field and H-fields, however Pic 3 shows the reading that should be where everyone in the home spends their time.
Exposure to even low EMFs for extended periods of time is advised by “the authorities” to be undesirable. Knowing that, once the level of EMF exposure is determined within the various locations in the home, residents need to be aware and adjust their behaviour accordingly, ie “not sit too close to the TV”.
Maybe your mum was onto something all those years ago. And for those people who live near external apparatus that generate EMF’s, consider what your health is worth. Pic 4 was taken on the side of a road where high voltage lines crisscross the landscape with private homes close by. That reading was taken some distance from the lines themselves as can be seen, however, even more concerning was that as we drove along the road for many kilometers in this area, the EMF Tester sounded continual warnings and even severe warning of our exposure to H-fields that were extant in the area so such so that we had to turn off the device and exit the area as quickly as the legal speed limit would permit. It may be worth checking to see the general EMF levels in the geographic location of your home. For some people this may be proven to be a little scary.
Our home is in a safe location and not swimming in a sea of EMFs from extenal sources and we are now very aware of the distances we need to be away from charging phones, even the refrigerator when it is running, and, to a lessor extent, when it’s not.
After seeing the effects of LED produced EMFs in the home as mentioned in Part 1, I have removed all of the LEDs from our home and replaced them with incandescent lights. They do not eliminate all EMF’s although the reduction in EMF production was noted and therefore the distance needed to be away from them to be safe was less.
My decision to return back to those very inefficient lighting choices that use significantly more energy to do the same job, was prompted more because of the now known effects of the light spectrum. That is another issue you can research in your spare time.
Our perspective is that it is not worth compromising your health to save a few bucks. Yes be energy efficient, but not at any price.
